Duke TIP Scholar Weekend

March 8–9, 2014

Sponsored by KU Continuing Education

The program is open to all students in grades 8–11 who have participated in a Duke TIP Talent Search or been identified as academically gifted or talented by local school criteria. Students meet on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus for two days of intensive academic study. Students enroll in one class and explore material typically not included in high school curricula.

Scholar Weekend Dates

We will host the fall session on March 8–9, 2014.

Weekend Schedule

Students and parents check in on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at 2 Eaton Hall. After check-in and luggage storage, parents may leave or attend a short general meeting. At 8:30 a.m., students will leave to attend classes on campus. Day students should be picked up at 8:15 p.m. at 2 Eaton Hall, and overnight students will prepare for evening activities. Day students and a parent must check out with either a Resident Assistant or a Program Manager. A parent must come inside to check out their day student.

Parents should pick up all students on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at 2 Eaton Hall. There will be a brief class presentation at 2 Eaton Hall, and students will then be free to leave with their families at approximately 4:15–4:30 p.m. You may download the student and parent schedule. View an interactive campus map (click the link "List all Buildings," then click "Eaton Hall (EATN)" in the drop-down list). Eaton Hall is located at 1520 W. 15th St.

Hotel Accommodation

Sleeping room availability is limited. Register early to ensure room availability. For details, contact Gina Cregg at gcregg@ku.edu.

Overnight students will be housed at the Holiday Inn Express (3411 Iowa Street) with another student in a room with two double beds. There are times when we need to also use a roll-away bed if there are an odd number of students. Each student will be assigned to a room with a student of the same gender and, if possible, of a similar age. There is a pool at the hotel, but no swimming is allowed. A curfew will be enforced (refer to schedule) and students' actions will be well monitored.

Telephones in the hotel rooms will be long-distance restricted, but students may use pay phones in the hotel to call home. If families need to contact their student(s) during the day, they should call Gina Cregg at (785) 864-7878, or they may leave a message at the Holiday Inn Express at (785) 749-7555. At night, KU Duke TIP Resident Assistants will serve as chaperones in the hotel. In the event of an emergency, family members may call the hotel and ask to speak with a KU Duke TIP Resident Assistant.

Financial Scholarships Financial Scholarships are no longer available.

Financial scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis to families who demonstrate a need. A student with need will only receive financial aid once during the academic year of 2013–2014. Scholarships will be in the range of $100–$150.

To be considered for a scholarship, the parent will need to fill out a secured survey. Visit this link to complete a scholarship application. Once we have made our determination we will contact the parent by email in regards to a possible Scholarship. If a Scholarship is awarded, the parent will be given a code to use when registering.  At that time, a registration application should be filled out (either on-line or by mailing or faxing) if the parent decides to enroll their student. The cut-off date for Scholarship inquiries is January 31, 2014, at 12:00 p.m. (noon). Upon notification of receipt of a financial aid award, your payment for the balance of the tuition is due within 7 days. If your payment is not received within 7 days of award notification, your financial aid and program slot may be offered to another student. Credit card payments may be made by phone at (785) 864-5823 or toll free (877) 404-5823.
